In February of 1983 there was a particular bushfire that directly impacted on my own family.
It's known as the Ash Wednesday fires.
The Ash Wednesday fires threatened my families property down on the coast along the Great Ocean Road. The 10 acre property has been in the family for generations and considered priceless, especially to my Dad.

Regardless of where you live, every family needs to have a basic fire plan.
One way that we can help to keep our children safe in a possible
fire emergency is to draw up a basic fire escape plan.
Here is an example that you might be interested to try with your school aged child.
Using large poster paper draw a birds-eye- view of your house.
Doing this type of activity with children teaches them about what to do in a fire emergency.
It also raises an opportunity to discuss the importance in keeping ourselves safe and
calm in a fire situation.
Discuss some possible safe exits and meeting spots.
Place your new fire escape plan behind a bedroom door.
When discussing fire emergencies it is important to keep the discussion simple and using basic language. Creating a fire plan should also be made to empower a child.
