I'm not sure how you'd label this one... Hobby? Infatuation? Natural Learning? All of the above?
I wanted chickens. It's been my life long dream for many many years to have chooks. I have them.
Hubby took over, bought more, researched, bought more, got ducks, bought an incubator and two rabbit hutches for the babies and bought a few more.
The children learn in a natural daily environment to feed the chickens and ducks and collect eggs and give water.
Just recently the first lot of chickens have hatched out. Today we busted a duckling out. It had been trying to get out of its shell for a long time and after not helping another chicken out and it dying we didn't really hesitate in breaking it out. We slowly broke off little bits of the shell and a little bit of the sac thingy.
With lots of big heaves it finally managed to plop it's body out of the shell. It's body looked wet but is actually quite dry to the touch.
We then left him to warm up and dry out in the incubator for awhile.
As I checked on it hours later it just looks exhausted and is barely moving. Tonight it just seems tired but it's breathing isn't so labored.
Now I'm no chicken or duck expert so I'm not sure if you should be busting it out or not. We were careful not to just crack it open as we are aware it needs the egg busting out to strengthen its body/lungs. I do know that this one was a bit stuck-ish so we could farewell be saving its little duck life.
We shall know by morning.
The children seem to be enjoying having babies in the house. They like watching them and holding them. They also like getting them food and water. I've not done any work but they are definitely learning.
I love the idea of living and raising children on a farm with sustainable lifestyle... I just don't live on a farm :(
This is my favourite way to home school!!
5 things I am thankful for:
1. Hubby doing all the work *thanks hun*
2. Kids enjoying it
3. Natural learning technique
4. Getting something I always wanted but never did.. Reproducing animals
5. Questions and statements of a 6yr old
