{Review} 10 Silly Wombats by Ed Allen

I love this book, it brings me back to teen years, sitting on a bus, singing along with a bunch of 30 students. I am sure that the adults got sick of us quickly.. starting at... 99 beer bottles sitting on the wall. Kids might know it more as 'Ten Green Bottles'.

This is a fun counting book, going from 10 to 1 with hidden numbers to spot on every page!

Ten silly wombats getting on a bus. Ten silly wombats getting on a bus. And if one silly wombat should make a big fuss, There'll be nine silly wombats getting on a bus.

Here's what they have to say:
Come counting with all the silly wombats, throughout their very silly day! Starting with a  trip on the bus, the wombats have lots of fun adventures, including a tea party, playing hide-and-seek, eating ice cream at the beach, and even driving racing cars!

It can be purchased for RRP $13.99 through Schoolastic Australia

Ed Allens has also written 10 Green Geckos (2012) & 10 Hooting Owls (2013)

Andrea Edmonds is an illustrator who works with pencil, watercolour, charcoal, pastels and ink. She finds her inspiration in wildlife, nature and the humour of daily life. This is her first book.

{Review} If you're cheeky and you know it! by P. Crumble

A NEW book from the creators of the very popular If You're Happy and You Know It! This book is a cheeky reinvention of the classic rhyme and one easy to memorise.
Playful, funny illustrations will encourage children to join in with the actions, my kids thought it was so silly and faces might have been pulled ;) (Ahem)

For younger children it shows different components of what animals do, such as frogs eating flies and giraffes with long necks and even meerkats.

I am going to have this book ready and waiting for those crazy times when kids have a little bit of cabin-fever and need to wriggle around and do something fun, silly and funny.

I am fairly certain they call this "fun for the whole family".

If you're a monkey and you know it, pull a face. If You're a monkey and you know it, pull a face. If you're a monkey and you know it, then you really should just show it, If you're a monkey and you know it, pull a face!

{Review} Omar the Strongman by Gregory Rogers

Omar the Strongman illustrates at a child's level, to serve others in the jobs they are in or doing and by doing so they become people of strong character. We often talk about what it means to work hard and serve others. In a society that says 'do what you want', 'follow your dreams no matter the cost', and 'think yourself higher than every other person around' we walk in the opposite direction. Think of others higher than you think of yourself, serve others, be humble, be people of integrity.
Omar works hard to help all those around him, but does the desires of his heart come to pass? You'll have to read it yourself to find out.

"Omar is very busy at the new odd job man at Circus La Fleur, and he loves to watch the stars pratcice during his lunch break.
Would Omar ever have an act of his own?"

{Review} Possum Magic Animals by Mem Fox

Board Books are great for little kids. I place our board books in a shallow box at the bottom of our bookshelf for the toddlers to use as they desire. Using a shallow box means it is easy for little children to put back when they are finished. It works for me.

Possum Magic has been a delightful story travelling all over Australia for such a long time I remember the story as a child, as a teen and now as a parent. The best part? Lamingtons... Ok so perhaps not.

This Board Book is about the animals with simple illustrations especially for little ones, perfect for my toddler and perfect to add to an Australian Studies Unit or Theme. Even better, when reading the story book to older children your toddler could hold her own book and follow along with you... Or sit on your lap counting "two eyes" on every animal. Just Sayin...

Julie Vivas illustrated this book and it is fantastic!

Mem Fox is the author of much loved classic children’s picture books, Possum Magic and Where is the Green Sheep? Some we already have and read ;)

The story behind Possum Magic can be read here
There is so many activities you can do with your tots regarding this book including cooking!

{Review}: Koalas, Kites and Kangaroos by David Ridyard

Our School Inspector reminded me of a method of remembering how to spell when I  was in school!! Remember your 'have-a-go' pad? You would ask mum how to spell something, grab your have-a-go pad and try spell it yourself. If you were correct then AWESOME! If it was 'almost right' someone would spell it to you. Did you do that in school? Strangely enough my 'have-a-go' pad was extremely... empty.
My children ask me all the time, how do you spell ___. They have a go, and if needed I correct it.

This book is like a have-a-go pad, or... like a beginners dictionary. In alphabetical order, with written words already. What really makes this book is the illustrations and the fact that it is Aussie all the way through, perfect for an Australian Study or to add to an Aussie theme.

Koalas, kites and kangaroos,
Penguins and possums and pelicans too.
Worm-eating wagtails and wombats at play,
Surf-riding seas on a hot summer's day.
Rabbits on roller-skates, lizards on land,
Card-playing crocodiles, shells on the sand.
Turn over the pages and take a close look
At this wonderful, colourful alphabet book.

  • Ages 5+
  • Much-loved picture book back in print
  • Beautifully illustrated alphabet book
  • Price $15.99

Humorous illustrations of animals introduce the alphabet with a charming collection of words to read and learn.

David Ridyard is the author of the Grandpa Loves Us, Sometimes I Have To, and Christmas.

Doreen Gristwood is the author and illustrator of Marzipan, and also illustrated Koalas, Kites and Kangaroos.
