If you know much about me you'd know I hate watching movies & we have no TV. A decision that has left our family blessed abundantly.
But how do I entertain the kids when I need some piece and quiet?
I don't, they do.
They have a variety of toys and equipment in which to enhance their natural learning interests and abilities available at just about any moment.
As a longer term 'go with the flow' 'on the spot learning' family I am finding the children find fun educational activities to increase their brain growth and development without the need for my input.
I'll find children starting an art project they came across on the book shelf or a box, or reading an atlas or book about the body, or checking out the different animals in all the different books we have.
They'll play music, set up church, sing and dance with no need for my input. They will even play a variety of songs through iTunes.
Sometimes their activities are a repeat on something we did together as a group, or they've seen previously.
But I'm finding this 'method' easier going then a strict-book-work-only style of education for them and for me.
I also find they are more willing to complete the (more boring) bookwork I give them because it doesn't take 'ages'. Yet they still continue to learn.
I have google at the ready for when those questions come in, and I have a stack of 'old style' books on the bookshelf ready to go when called upon.
I consciously purpose to answer as honestly as possible every intelligent question asked, pictures included.
And so you have it..
However, I refuse to give myself a label on the basis I wish not to define or limit what we do or don't do according to each person perception of their definition of the terms used. So I make no apology to unschoolers for using work books, and make no excuses to book workers for going book-free.
I do what works and works well for us at any given time :) freely
So, Isaiah has fixed up a light circuit (light bulb, battery, wires) to create a 'torch', done a 3D puzzle of bones. As in put together a skeleton, and is now 'plaiting' pipe cleaners.
I'm proud of the achievements that happen with little to no input by me, cos it shows character that I'm not sure one could cultivate through 'teaching them'.
The kids doing well!!
