I didn't realise until recently that I have not been teaching my kids how to be served and talk to strangers at the checkout. Indirectly yes but not giving them the opportunity to do so themself.
I also realized that if my kids attended school they would have that learning opportunity at the school canteen for example.
And so, I've been attempting to allow the 'getting served' to occur in our everyday lives.
In some aspects it's difficult because staff are not used to children being the one to speak directly to. If I'm standing nearby they always talk to me instead.
On the other hand my loud mouthed babes suddenly become softly spoken.
My children also do not (yet) have the concept of money. What they are and how much they need. Obviously we'll work on that.
Some ideas that I have (that allows a safe environment without disruption to other customers and too much discomfort to staff) is:
Putting our order in at the fish and chip shop $6 chips please isn't too hard...
Ordering an ice cream at Maccas..
Buying a choc milk from subway..
Even Aunty Vicky has gotten into the deal. Gives miss 4 some money to buy a snake & let's her keep the change. She says I'm totally into teaching them independence. ;)
We did have a 'shop' but havn't played in a very long time. Isaiah loved being the shop keeper.
If you got something fun and interesting feel free to share your ideas!!
How did your children learn how to order and pay for things at checkouts?
