Menstrual talk

A few weeks back I read a post about talking to our daughters about sex, periods and the reproductive system.

The general consensus was about fear. "I don't look forward to" "I wouldn't know what to say" "I don't know when" etc but most mothers seemed to be put into a state of fear over the taboo subject.

Me? I'm excited. I'm looking forward to sharing the beauty in the menstrual cycle, what it means to hit puberty, what will happen and why. How menstrual pads work and why.

Many months ago (pre-preg) I was thinking about it. And just straight out told my 4 yr old daughter "when you get old enough to have a baby, inside your tummy gathers blood. The blood is to feed and keep the baby safe. But if there's no baby the blood comes out"

Pretty simple right? I think so.

The curiosity asked some questions and I happily answered.

Mainly she wanted to know if it hurt. I told her not really but sometimes your back or tummy might hurt a little bit.

Right down to the facts, not sexual in ANY way, appropriate language for a little girl.

We must not realise, what a beautiful, precious thing having a menstrual cycle. It's what prepares our womb for the growth of our baby. It's the way God designed the female body to work.

Just last night, miss 4 asked what 'that' was for. That being an enclosed pack of pads at the grocery store.

So I told her. Again. For when your old enough to have a baby, and the blood forms in your tummy, and when it's ready it'll come out.

I suppose over the years that the length and wording will change, but for now this is good.

I look forward to one day taking each of my daughters out on a special date and sharing more, and giving them a special package for them being so grown up. Our society or culture don't initiate any sort of 'your grown up' kind of thing, and I think it's important.

Anyway, that's it for now ;)
