Sensory learning is fascinating to me! Researchers are really discovering it's benefits to improving the way children make connections in the brain and so I think it's worth considering when it comes to teaching our children.
This post is about learning through our sense of touch.
This post is about learning through our sense of touch.
Here I am creating a fun way to really challenge children's understanding of letters and numbers using wax that I've dripped on paper and allowed to cool completely. By doing this I am creating a raised surface that can easily be felt through touch. You could use craft glue or a hot glue gun, which would allow you to create a similar feel, however, I decided to try wax.
Safety First!
Of course it is not advised to get children to use a lit candle.
Let's keep things safe and keep it for the adults to do.
Sensory Activity using Wax cards - Children can be blindfolded and handed a card or piece of paper with a number or letter created using wax. Only through their sense of touch can they work out what letter or number is on the card presented to them. You might ask them to describe what they feel and this will help develop their descriptive language and decode in their mind what the characteristics of that letter or number..
A greater challenge would be to have them decode small words. Starting with the beginning letter they work out the remaining letters and using their skills in spelling they attempt to work out what the word is.

For a bit of fun I decided to have a go at writing the 'Laughing Kids Learn' web address. This took me ages and it's quite obvious that I got better as I went along. LOL
The good news is that sensory learning is not at all difficult to implement, even at home. In fact I've covered many other great ways right here on Laughing Kids Learn!!!
