Tonight (Friday night) our 6 piece family were invited to my in-laws to celebrate my father-in-laws birthday.
We were asked to bring something along to share (chicken & vege soup & a pile of bread rolls). We also made cheese sticks but they were still on their hot baking trays.
I drove slowly along hoping the pot of hot soup won't spill. It didn't.
As we rock up, I carry a pile of hot baking trays hoping like anything I don't get burnt. Kicking the door with my foot 3 times is my way of knocking. It worked.
Then bombardment. Oh. My. Goodness. Get. Me. Out. Of. Here!!
I havn't even entered the house and the questions rise, as well as the hellos.
I have hot soup in the car with bread rolls, 4 kids and a husband. And my bag.
I'm being told of cakes, decorations and what someone did today.
Let me set some sort of background... Hubby is the oldest of 9. That makes 9 birth children who once resided in that house. The oldest 5 have moved out, oldest 3 have married and oldest 1 has had 4 kids.. (that's us). If you add that all up (minus one at work) that equals 17. 17 people over for a birthday celebration in the one tiny house. 8 people talking at the same time as I enter...
How do you handle this? I don't handle it well. I'm bossy and like to be in charge and this is out of (my) control. I have jobs to do before I can get inside, comfortably relax and check on my kids.. Again.. Before saying hi.
I hear the ever polite "do you want me to get the kids out of the car?" yes! Yes I do!!
On another trip to the car to grab something and lock the car I'm thinking this is crazy! I should be used to it by now (7yrs) and they should back off and let me in!!
I thought... When my rellies would visit from NZ they would come inside and chat and cuddle and laugh and talk about plane trips and snack foods. We would spend that time together for awhile and THEN!!! Bring their bags in and let them get settled! I have a new plan in place...
Arrive at in-laws... Everyone come inside... Say hellos and when no one is looking sneak to the car and bring food and bags in.
It sounds easy..
