Phonics - order to teach - part I

When I started out, and saw the multitude of charts and 'stuff' I truly found it rather overwhelming. The English Language is such a bizzare mix it is a wonder children, teenagers and adults have spelling issues.

For memory to myself I've decided to record the 'order' of which I am mixing up and choosing what to teach first.

Firstly, the children know the names of the Alphabet, so we linked names with sounds.

Here's how I've done it so far:

Single Phonograms - the sounds associated with each single letter of the alphabet

1) Each of these letters have only ONE sound/Phonic

  • B D F H K J Z V T M P N W L & R

2) Vowels

  • A - 5 sounds
  • E - 2 sounds
  • I - 2 sounds
  • O - 4 sounds
  • U - 3 sounds

3) Each of these letters have TWO sounds/phonic

  • C S G X Q

  • Plus the letter Y - 2 vowel sounds + 1 consonant sound

and there you have 26 single letter sounds and how many each have.
